Unit 8: When Will It All End?

Introduction

 

Sally and Gina enjoyed a short but wonderful vacation on the cruise ship.

They explored new places, bought souvenirs in the colourful caribbean markets, and relaxed in the sun. Coming home, they felt so refreshed.

Unfortunately, this happy situation didn't last long.

October was proving to be a trying time, and a surprise for both women was just around the corner.

 

Sally : Really, I understand, Phil. It takes time to get over a divorce.

Philip : Don't get me wrong. It's not you. I think you're awesome! It's me. I need some space right now. I'm just not ready for a commitment. You do understand, don't you?

Sally : Sure, I do. Don't worry about it.

Philip : We can still be friends, can't we?

Sally : Of course we can. Listen, Phil, I've got to go. Bye.

Gina : Hey, Sally! It's me! What's wrong?

Sally : Phil's just broken up with me, that's all!

Gina : I'm so sorry. I know how much you like him.

Sally : If only I hadn't tried to push him into a serious relationship so soon, we might still be going out. I really thought he was the one for me.

Gina : You can't help that now, Sally. Don't be so hard on yourself. Come on. If he's really the one, he'll be back.

Sally : You're right, as usual. I'll be OK. Why are you back so early anyway?

Gina : You'll never believe this. When I went to the office this morning, everything was locked up and there was a notice on the door. The company has gone bankrupt.

Sally : You're kidding! Why didn't they tell everybody?

Gina : No idea. There was a phone number to call for more information. So what am I supposed to do now?

Sally : We'll think of something. They do say that every cloud has a silver lining. It's time you found a job you like anyway.

Gina : You're right. I really hated that job. Maybe it is for the best. Oh, I'd better phone that number and find out when I'm going to be paid.

Sally : I'll get it. Hello, Uncle Lou.

Gina : Hi, Lou. You look happy!

Lou : Hi, girls. Guess what! I've got some really good news. I've just been given a $250,000 grant to continue my research for the next three years.

Gina : That's fantastic.

Sally : That's wonderful, Uncle Lou. You deserve it!

Lou : Listen, girl. Why don't we all go out to lunch to celebrate. Any place you want. It's on me. I won't take no for an answer, and I'll give Pete a call and maybe he can join us.

Gina : Great! We could use some cheering up.

Lou : Why? What's up?

Sally : Well, Phil's just dumped me, and Gina's lost her job.

Lou : Really? That's terrible, but you know, I've got a very strong feeling that good luck for you both is just around the corner.

Sally : Uncle Lou, you're great! You always look on the bright side.

Gina : And you couldn't have come at a better time. Let's go!
