Unit 3: On the Move
Video Story
Introduction
The New Year has started well for Sally. Time is flying by. She appreciates her
uncle’s warm hospitality but doesn’t want to outstay her welcome. She loves
Vancouver, and secretly hopes that Philip will call her. She thinks they have so
much in common.
Gina, on the other hand, is stressed. She isn’t getting along well with her
roommate’s boyfriend, who has just moved into the apartment. She and Sally
have already agreed that they would like to look for an apartment together, so
Gina calls Sally, and they decide to meet for lunch to discuss their plans.

Sally: Well, that was a great lunch!
Gina: Yeah, mine was really good, too.
Peter: I thought you might like this place. It’s one of my favourite lunch
spots. Now, this one’s on me, girls.
Gina: I thought we were going Dutch? Are you sure?
Sally: OK, but it’s my turn next time.
Peter: Sounds good to me. Is that the time? I have to run. I’m playing
squash with Phil.
Gina: Hold on! We haven’t decided what we’re doing on Sunday.
Peter: Um, OK. How about Chinatown? Sally hasn’t been there yet and
there’s lots to see. What do you think?
Gina: Well, if it’s a nice day, we could drive up the coast.
Sally: Listen, let’s meet here for brunch, say 11:30, and we can decide
then.
Peter: I really have to go. See you.
Sally: Bye now. Oh, Pete, say hi to Phil for me. If he’s not doing
anything on Sunday, why don’t you ask him to come along?
Peter: Sure, I’ll ask him. Gotta go! Good luck with the apartment
hunting!
Gina: Thanks. That reminds me, did you bring today’s paper?
Sally: Yeah, one ad really caught my eye. Here it is. “Spacious ground
floor apartment in cozy character home near downtown.” Doesn’t
that sound great?
Gina: Well, not really. If you ask me, character homes for rent are
usually pretty expensive, specially downtown.
Sally: That’s true, but if we live downtown, we can walk to the stores,
theatres and nightclubs.
Gina: I hear what you’re saying, but character homes need a lot of care
and attention.
Sally: Let me get this straight. You’re saying you don’t want to live
downtown?
Gina: No, not at all! Don’t get me wrong. I’d love to live downtown.
It’s just that I’d prefer to live in an apartment building rather than
a character home. There are way more amenities — balcony,
parking, pool — and it’s more secure.
Sally: Well, when you put it like that, it makes a lot of sense. An
apartment downtown it is!
Gina: Great. Now, as I see it, we just need a two-bedroom apartment.
Sally: And we should make sure that utilities are included in the rent.
Gina: Definitely. I couldn’t agree more!
Sally: Uh, how about this? “Pinewood Manor, two bedrooms, large living
area, five appliances, cable and hydro included. Cat OK.” Oh,
that’s good. I had almost forgotten about my lovely little cat!
Gina: That does sound like a nice place. Five appliances is quite the
luxury, and they allow cats — only it doesn’t say how much it is.
Let’s call right now. I have my cell phone. What’s the number?
Sally: Sally 555-1212
Gina: Thanks. Oh hello, I’m calling about the apartment for rent. Open
house this evening? What time? Can you give me the address
please?

Cultural Commentary
Introduction
Eye on the Street: Interview about Lifestyles
Audio and text with a photo-still of a twenty-two-year-old Mexican female being
interviewed.

Interviewer: Adrianna, what do you do for a living?
Adrianna: Right now, I’m a student and I’m working as a cultural assistant at
the English Language Centre in Counselling Services at the University of
Victoria.
Interviewer: How long is your work day?
Adrianna: About five hours.
Interviewer: Uh huh. What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Adrianna: I paint, take pictures and I spend a lot of time with my friends.
Interviewer: How about on the weekends?
Adrianna: Same thing. Oh, and I surf and scuba dive.
Interviewer: You’re a real outdoors person, aren’t you?
Adrianna: I guess so.
Interviewer: What do you foresee in your future?
Adrianna: Well, I’m going to go to grad school, so that’ll be three years, and
then I’ll be certified as an art therapist. Who knows! I might meet the man
of my dreams along the way!
Interviewer: That’s great! What would you like to be doing in five years?
Adrianna: I’d like to have my own practice doing art therapy and maybe be in
a serious relationship. I’ll take what comes.
Interviewer: If you could change places with anyone, who would you become?
Adrianna: Oh my goodness! (laugh) Living or dead?
Interviewer: It doesn’t matter.
Adrianna: I’ve always wanted to be like Emily Carr, the artist.
Interviewer: Why?
Adrianna: She was just so brave in her ambitions. She knew what she wanted
to do and she did it. Everybody at the time thought she was crazy, but that
was OK because she produced such amazing work. Yeah, that would be
neat!
Interviewer: Adrianna, thank you very much.
Adrianna: You’re welcome.

Interviewer:Interviewer What kind of lifestyle do you have at present? Do you
want to change it at all? If so, how?
